How to Prepare Your Home for Professional Photos Before It Hits the Market

Professional photography and drone video make a real difference in how a listing performs, but the camera can only capture what's actually there. A few hours of prep before a shoot day consistently makes the difference between good photos and photos that make a buyer stop scrolling.

Inside, the biggest lever is counter and surface clutter: kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, and nightstands photograph best close to empty. Open every blind and curtain the morning of the shoot for natural light, and turn on every lamp, since mixed lighting is one of the harder things to fix well in editing. Put pets and pet items away for the day if at all possible.

Outside, mow within a day or two of the shoot, edge the walkways, and clear driveways and porches of vehicles, trash cans, and hoses. For acreage and farm properties specifically, fresh mowed pasture near the house and visible, well-maintained fencing make a disproportionate difference in how the aerial coverage reads.

None of this needs to be perfect. The goal is removing distractions so the property itself is what a buyer notices first, which is exactly what professional photography and video are built to do once the space is ready for it.
